Description

The School of Audio Engineering, formerly St James's Church, is a building located on Chillingworth Road in Islington. It was constructed between 1837 and 1838 by architects H.W. Inwood and E.N. Clifton, with an extension added in 1839 and a tower completed in 1850. The building is made of grey brick, which is now painted, along with stone and stucco, and features a roof of artificial slate.

The original facade includes an off-centre hexastyle portico supported by stuccoed Ionic columns, with a plain entablature and a pediment. To the left of the portico is a tower that has a flat-arched entrance at the base, featuring an eared architrave and a cornice on consoles. A cornice extends across the tower from the portico, above which is a circular window, now without dressings, flanked by piers. The tower's open stage is square in plan and has paired Ionic antae at the corners, an entablature, a coped parapet, and antefixae. To the right of the portico is an altered answering bay on the ground floor, which has a round-arched window above it, along with a cornice and a circular window. The attic storeys are stepped back and are part of the new building.
