Description

Caledonian Road Underground Station is a Grade II listed building featuring a steel frame clad in brick, faced with ox-blood red faience produced by the Leeds Fireclay Company Ltd. The station stands two storeys high and has five arcaded bays, with the entrance located in the central bay and a former exit, now blocked, in the northernmost bay. Above the blocked exit is the original EXIT sign in raised gilded letters, while the sign above the entrance indicating the station name is a modern replica. The remaining bays have always housed shops; the shop front to the left of the entrance retains its original features, including decorative moulded corners on the transom lights and panelled doors, while the other shop front is modern. The upper storey features altered timber Diocletian windows set in keyed semi-circular arches, adorned with egg-and-dart decoration and cartouches between the springers of the arcade, topped by a modillion cornice.

Inside, this station was one of two Green stations (the other being Earl's Court) where the lifts went directly to platform level without an intermediate stair. The ticket hall was modernised in 1987 and lacks original features, except for some sections of cornice. The straight stair leading down to the spiral stair retains original green wall tiling with a pomegranate frieze and a timber handrail. The spiral stair also features original tiling in three contrasting shades of mauve, a bronze handrail, and a timber fire hydrant cabinet at the top. The platforms are extensively tiled in the same mauve colour scheme and include tiled signage, with the station name displayed in dark-brown lettering on white panels, as well as several original aedicular WAY OUT AND NO EXIT panels, although some have been replicated. Additionally, there are two metal roundels bearing the station name from around 1910, which are very rare to survive in situ.
