Description

Nos. 18 and 20 St John Street is a late 19th-century warehouse located in Islington. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and features a roof made of artificial slate. The building stands six storeys tall over a basement and has a two-window range.

On the ground floor, there are two broad cambered-arched openings, with the left opening being wider. The piers are faced with Corinthian pilasters made of polished pink granite, which support stone imposts and decorative moulded brick arches above. A cornice runs along the top, and some original shopfront details are still visible.

The upper storeys consist of four floors of windows and doors arranged beneath two pointed arches. The two bays are wide enough to create brick piers in the main wall. On the right side, there are warehouse doors framed in wood, while the left side features flat-arched tripartite windows divided by slim engaged columns of marble that have foliage capitals and shaft rings. A warehouse crane is located at the fourth-floor level, corbelled out on a decorative marble column. An oculus with a stone architrave is also present, and the gable is coped with a finial at the apex.
