Description
No. 111 Charterhouse Street is a former cold storage warehouse, now used as offices, built in 1900. It was designed by A.H. Mackmurdo for John Palmer. The building is constructed of brick, which is now painted, set in Flemish bond, with dressings of Portland stone, also painted on the upper floors. The roof is obscured by a parapet.
The structure has three storeys and features a three-window range. The ground floor has been reconstructed as an open arcade with a 1980s front that is set back. The left bay has a flat arch, while the other two bays have round arches. The stone base is complemented by rusticated brickwork above, with the round arches featuring projecting stone voussoirs. There is a cornice above this level.
On the first floor, there are three tall and narrow flat-arched windows, each with an architrave and cornice, positioned between Corinthian pilasters that have festooned capitals. Festoons are also present over each window, and a cornice runs above. The pilasters extend as piers to the attic storey, which includes a central oculus and an upswept parapet on the side bays, with a central shaped gable that is now flat, likely truncated.
