Description
Number 22 is a terraced house that has been converted into offices, built in 1788. It features yellow brick set in Flemish bond with Coade stone dressings, and its roof is obscured by a parapet. The building has four storeys and a two-window range. There are steps leading up to a round-arched entrance, which has vermiculated quoins, a fluted impost, and a head keystone, all likely made of Coade stone. The doorway has panelled reveals, a doorcase with pilasters, a cornice, a fanlight, and a panelled door that retains its original design. To the right side, there is a segmental-arched carriage entrance with a head keystone, also probably made of Coade stone, and festooned spandrels. The upper windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, and there is a moulded brick cornice above. A parapet crowns the building, and cast-iron railings lead up to the steps.
Inside, the staircase features a wreathed and ramped handrail, stick balusters, and an open string. The ceiling of the first-floor front room is adorned with five roundel paintings representing Architecture, Music, Painting, and Sculpture, likely created by the elder Thomas Stowers, a landscape painter who resided at 22 Charterhouse Square from 1788 until at least 1811.
