Description
A warehouse constructed in 1868 by Isaacs for George Farmiloe and Sons Ltd, lead and glass merchants. The building is of yellow brick and granite with stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings, the roof being concealed by a parapet. It is four storeys high with a basement, and has a seven-window front. The design is eclectic, with a three-window central section slightly recessed. The ground floor has a plinth of polished granite and rustication, with quoins to the sides of the wings. A central round-arched entrance has a springing band, archivolt, head keystone, and five-sided arched hoodmould. Flanking this are stepped, segmental-arched windows, and broad elliptical-arched openings, one a carriage entrance with ornate iron gates. Above the entrance is a fascia with sunk Roman letters reading “LEAD & GLASS/GEORGE FARMILOE & SONS LIMITED/MERCHANTS”. The first-floor windows are flat-arched with round-arched panels above, scrolled keystones, and decorative tympana; the central window has a column of polished granite. Second and third-floor windows have segmental arches recessed under a flat arch with a springing band and decorative keystone, except for the central window on each floor, which has a flat arch and a central column of polished granite, the second-floor window set under a segmental bracketed canopy and the third-floor window beneath a round arch. A dentil cornice sits between the second and third floors. The entablature has a cornice supported by single brackets in the centre and single and paired brackets alternately on the wings, with a blocking course above. The interior is reported to retain a fine staircase and panelled boardrooms. A further range of four storeys and five bays extends to the rear, linked to the main building by cast-iron galleries on several floors.
