Description

A pair of terraced houses with ground-floor shops, built around 1820, situated on a prominent corner. The shops were altered in the mid-19th century and again between 1880 and 1910. The houses are constructed of brown and gold stock bricks in a Flemish bond pattern. Number 92 has a painted shopfront from around 1880 to 1910, and number 94 has a fine wooden shopfront dating to the mid-19th century. They have a Welsh-slate hipped mansard roof with dormers, and a stucco parapet to number 94. Brick stacks are visible at the centre and ends of the building. Each house has an entrance to a side street, leading to an interior staircase to the upper floors.

The houses are three storeys high with an attic, and each has two windows. Gauged brick flat arches feature above the upper-floor windows, and the first-floor sashes are set in red-brick arched recesses linked by a moulded stucco impost string. The upper floors have 6/6 sashes, including on the side elevations, with number 92 having 2/2 sashes on the second floor and number 94 having 2/2 sashes on the first floor.

The shopfront of number 94 features a panelled and glazed door to the left, with a plain rectangular overlight, and a three-light window to the right, with ogee arched heads, thin glazing bars, panelling below, and engaged fluted three-quarter columns as decoration. A frieze adorned with lion’s heads sits below a dentilled cornice. The side elevation of number 94 facing Cloudsley Road has early 20th-century painted advertisements and a 1 1/2-storey extension to the rear.
