Description

Numbers 9, 10, and 11 and attached railings are three double-fronted terraced villas dating from 1839 to 1841. They were designed by Joseph Kay, Surveyor to the Thornhill Estate. The villas are built of brown/beige stock bricks in a Flemish bond, with stucco dressings. They have Welsh-slate gabled roofs, with projecting eaves, and brick party wall and end stacks. Number 11 has a hipped end to its roof. The buildings feature a centre-hall entrance plan and are two storeys high, with three windows to each villa, the centre bay being recessed. The ground floor openings have gauged brick round arches. Numbers 9 and 10 have doorways with fluted pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads, panelled doors (the door at Number 9 is 20th century), and patterned fanlights. The doorway at Number 11 has been altered to a flat arch and incorporates 20th-century details. The windows are largely 2/2 sash windows, although Number 11 has 20th-century casements to the first floor. A stucco sill band and gauged-brick flat arches are present on the first floor. Numbers 9 and 11 have attached cast-iron railings. Malvern Terrace forms a row of terraced villas, similar to Ripplevale Grove, set back from a paved pedestrian access with long front gardens, originally built as groomsmen's cottages for Ripplevale Grove; number 7 may have been the tack room with a carriageway leading to the ground floor.
