Description

The War Memorial at Thornhill Road Gardens is a First World War memorial erected in 1920. It is carved from granite and is located in Thornhill Road Gardens, near Richmond Avenue and Malvern Terrace, oriented northwest to southeast.

The memorial features a granite cross with a Celtic head, set upon a tapering shaft that is 1.2 meters high. Surrounding the cross are four trefoils that form a circle or aureole. The shaft rises in four set-back tiers and is topped by a tapering square plinth that is 1.1 meters high. This plinth rests on a two-tiered square base that is 0.5 meters high.

On the southeast face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "THEY WHOM THIS MEMORIAL/ COMMEMORATES AND WHOSE/ NAMES ARE RECORDED ON THE/ WAR SHRINE NOW RESTING IN/ HOLY TRINITY CHURCH WERE/ NUMBERED AMONG THOSE WHO/ AT THE CALL OF KING & COUNTRY/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM/ ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER/ AND FINALLY PASSED OUT OF SIGHT/ OF MEN BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND/ SELF-SACRIFICE GIVING UP/ THEIR OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS/ MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM/ LET THOSE THAT COME AFTER SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAMES ARE NOT FORGOTTEN." The northwest face bears the inscription: "LEST/ WE/ FORGET."
