Description
The Marple Bridge United Reformed Church War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920 by an unknown architect. It is made of carved granite and is located in the churchyard of Marple Bridge United Reformed Church, within a small garden. The memorial features a 3-meter tall Celtic Cross on a tapering shaft. The arms of the cross, the boss, and the shaft are decorated with interlace patterns carved in relief. The shaft stands on a tapered plinth that rests on a single step base. The southern face of the plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY / OF THOSE OF THE CHURCH / SUNDAY SCHOOL AND / BROTHERHOOD WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919."
