Description
Numbers 2 to 5 Malvern Terrace are four double-fronted terraced villas built between 1839 and 1841 by Joseph Kay, who was surveyor to the Thornhill Estate. They are constructed of brown/beige stock bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings and recessed stucco links. The roofs are gabled, covered in Welsh slate, and feature projecting eaves and brick party-wall stacks.
The villas follow a centre-hall entrance plan and each has two storeys and three windows. Ground-floor openings are framed by gauged brick round arches. The doorways have pilaster or column jambs supporting a corniced head, a panelled door and a patterned fanlight. Number 2 has 6/6 sash windows with curved and radial glazing bars; the others have 2/2 sashes, all with painted reveals. The first floor has a stucco sill band and gauged brick flat arches. The first-floor windows are 3/6 sashes on Number 2 and 2/2 sashes on the others, all with painted reveals. Numbers 3, 4, and 5 include attached cast-iron railings with urn finials. These villas are part of a single terrace, similar to Ripplevale Grove with a setback from a paved pedestrian access, incorporating long front gardens. Originally built as groomsmen's cottages for Ripplevale Grove, Number 7 may have served as a tackroom with a carriageway leading to the ground floor.
