Description

82 and 84 St John Street are two terraced houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the early 18th century. The building at number 82 features yellow brick set in Flemish bond, while number 84 uses header bond. The façade is finished with stucco, and the roof is hidden behind a parapet. The houses are four storeys tall, each with four windows. The ground floor is divided into four bays by panelled wooden pilasters and includes a works entrance and double doors that date from the late 18th century. There is a moulded stucco cornice with brackets at either end, added around 1900. The upper windows are flat-arched with gauged red brick heads; those at number 84 are recessed and framed with thick segments that are arched on the first floor. A stucco storey band runs between the second and third floors, topped by a parapet.

Inside, remnants of former workshop buildings can be seen on the ground floor, including cast-iron columns and possibly a galleried and toplit rear building. On the first floor, the front rooms on both the north and south sides are panelled and feature modillion cornices and eared chimneypieces. The south room includes a cast-iron grate, while the back room to the south has a panelled design with a part moulded and part dentil cornice and an eared chimneypiece. The staircase in number 84 is from the mid-18th century and has paired turned balusters.
