Description
No. 78 St John Street is a warehouse that has been converted into offices. It was likely built in 1886 for John Lawson and Co., brassfounders, who also occupied the adjacent No. 80. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stone details, and its roof is obscured by a parapet. It stands five storeys tall and features a one-window range.
On the ground floor, there are stone piers with faintly Gothic detailing that create a broad opening on the left, which was originally segmental-arched but has been altered to a flat-arch filled with late 20th-century glazing that mimics the piers. To the right, there is a narrow segmental-arched passage entrance. The first, second, and third floors each have a single pointed-arched opening now filled with glazing and wooden panelling, likely reflecting the original timber warehouse windows. An iron loading crane is located to the left of the window head. The fourth floor features a central round-arched window flanked by two smaller flat-arched windows, topped with a coped gable and urn finials.
