Description

This is a pair of terraced houses, built around 1821, as indicated by a plaque on the first floor. The houses are located on St John Street, Islington. They are now used as a shop with residential accommodation above. The exterior is primarily yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco facing and a roof of Welsh slate.

The building is four storeys high, with a basement, and features three windows per floor. The ground floor has an elliptical-arched entrance on the right, leading to Hat and Mitre Court. The rest of the ground floor is occupied by a shop front, likely dating to the mid-19th century, with pilasters and double doors flanking a large-paned window. The left-hand doors are panelled, retaining their original design and overlights. The upper-floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick detailing on the first floor; the left-hand windows are tripartite. A deep stucco band runs above the second floor, leading to a moulded stucco cornice and a blocking course. Dormers are incorporated within the mansard roof, and there’s a stack positioned on the party wall.
