Description
27 St John's Square is a single house that has been converted into offices and workshops. It was built in 1876 by the architect Richard Norman Shaw for Sir Edmund Lechmere. The building features red brick set in English bond and has a tiled roof. It stands five storeys tall and has a three-window range. The ground floor has a shop or workshop front that dates from the early 20th century. The first- and second-floor windows are segmental-arched and have drip moulds and keystones made of gauged brick. The second floor has two windows grouped to the left and one narrow window to the right, with moulded brick sills. There is a moulded brick storey band that merges into the eaves cornice. The roof has dormers on two floors, with the lower dormer being broad and flat-roofed, and the upper one narrower with a hipped roof.
Inside, the building has been much altered, but it retains an original fireplace with a cast-iron grate in the former ground-floor front room. The right-hand entrance hall and staircase wrap around the north-east corner of St John's Gate, with the stonework of the gate exposed in the hall and staircase. There is a panelled partition to the hall, a dogleg stair with stick balusters, and an additional flight with moulded risers and a panelled dado in the first-floor passage leading into St John's Gate. Sir Edmund Lechmere commissioned Shaw to restore St John's Gate in 1873-4.
