Description
Wierton Grange is a house dating from 1896, built in the style of R. Norman Shaw. The ground floor is constructed from red brick in English bond, while the first floor is clad with fishscale tiles. Stone dressings are used for occasional features on the ground floor and for the chimney stacks. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The house has an L-shaped layout, with the main range facing south and a wing extending north from the east end. It is two storeys high with attics.
The south-facing (garden) front has a steeply pitched gabled roof, with projecting gable end stacks and a central brick ridge stack. A cupola with a look-out is situated west of the centre. Dormers are evenly spaced and have alternating segmental and triangular pediments, featuring leaded cross windows. Two symmetrically placed flat-roofed canted bays project forward, featuring moulded wooden cornices and leaded wooden mullioned and transomed windows. A single leaded wooden mullioned and transomed window sits between the canted bays at the centre. The centre of the south front is recessed behind two engaged columns and a central column. A half-glazed door is located within this recess.
The north-facing (entrance) front features a broad porch between the centre and the west end. The porch is constructed with ashlar masonry on the ground floor, tile hanging on the first floor, and has paired Doric columns framing a recess which contains the front door. Two tall, narrow windows illuminate the hall to the east of the porch. The wing is built using the same materials as the main range and features two broad tile-hung eaves dormers. A rainwater head dated 1896 is also present on the wing.
The interior is reported to include a galleried two-storey hall and fine joinery, though it has not been inspected.
