Description
Numbers 44-53 Colebrooke Row consist of a terrace of houses dating to the late 18th century, developed in phases by Richard Masefield and Josiah Collins. Numbers 44-46 were built in 1774, numbers 47-49 occupied by 1772, and numbers 50-53 in 1768. The houses are constructed of brown brick with red gauged brick dressings, and have clay tile roofs, though number 50 has a Welsh slate roof, with number 51 possibly also originally tiled, now asphalted. They are three or four storeys high with basements, and have dormers in an attic roof. Each house generally has three windows.
The entrances to numbers 44, 47-9 and 52-53 are round-arched and feature doorcases with engaged Doric columns, an entablature, and an open pediment. Number 45 has a simpler doorcase with impost blocks and a round arch of gauged red brick. Number 46 retains only some cornices on consoles. Number 50 has a stucco architrave and cornice, and number 51 a simple moulded doorcase with a cornice. Fanlights and some original panelled doors remain. Most windows have flat arches with heads of gauged red brick, though those to numbers 52 (ground and first floors) and 53 have been painted or plastered over. Number 44 has plain, narrow stucco architraves. A storey band is located above the ground floor. A parapet tops the building, with a mansard roof to the attic except for numbers 47 and 49-50 that rise to four floors with a parapet, above which is a mansard roof with a dormer. Cast-iron railings are present to the area of number 44, and occasionally elsewhere, although they are mostly replacements.
