Description

This is a row of twelve to twenty houses, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, located on Mare Street. The houses are each three storeys high and feature two windows. Nos 12-16 also have basements. The exterior is constructed of stock brick with a stone-coped parapet. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within stucco-lined reveals and topped with gauged flat brick arches. Nos 12 and 14 have round-headed windows set within recessed arches on the ground floor. No. 14 features a five-panel door with fluted pilasters, a cornice head, and interlaced bars to its fanlight. No. 16 has a half-glazed door with a similar surround, but a plain fanlight, and a mid-19th century shop front has been inserted. No. 18 has a mid-to-late 19th century shop front, while No. 20 has lost its original windows and has an altered late-19th century shop front. Wrought iron handrails are present at the doorsteps of Nos 12-16, along with cast iron area railings.

Nos 12 to 20 (even) and Nos 24 to 56 (even) form a group.
