Description

This is a mid-19th century terraced building with a commercial unit on the ground floor and residential accommodation above. The eel, pie, and mash shop was opened in 1900, and the present interior layout and fittings date from the 1930s.

The building is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings, tiled piers, and marble stall risers to the glazed hardwood shopfront. The interior is tiled with a terrazzo floor and fittings of timber and marble. The building occupies a narrow commercial plot on the west side of Broadway Market. The ground floor is occupied by the dining room and kitchen, while the upper two floors contain domestic accommodation.

The shop front has been renovated with part-glazed doors and an overlight, flanked by large sash windows with metal handles, set above marble risers for the display of eels and pies. A gold-lettered fascia sits between original brackets, with an original retractable awning and four replica brass spotlight lamps above. The first and second floors feature pairs of sash windows with gauged brick arches and keystones – segmental arches on the first floor and flat-arched heads on the second storey. A simple rendered parapet displays a painted sign reading "F. COOKE EST. 1862 Trading from this premises since 1900”.

The ground floor shop and restaurant is tiled, with walls clad in glazed white and cream tiles, featuring a frieze and borders of mottled navy and light blue tiles, set against a series of inset rectangular mirrors. The floor is white and grey terrazzo with black tramline borders marking the counter and walls. To the right of the entrance is the main serving area, featuring a tiled counter with a marble top and shelves. Small enclosures with marble counters (originally used to display eels on ice) are located to either side of the central doors. The remaining space contains a series of seating booths with wooden backs and seats of steel legs, each with a marble-topped table supported by the wall and a steel upright. A leaded, stained-glass window with an Art Deco sunburst motif is located at the back of the restaurant, along with a door leading to the kitchens. The upper floors, accessible from the rear of the building, are in residential use.
