Description

The Sugar Room at Whitbread's Brewery, located on the south side, is a former sugar room that is now used for conferences and entertainment. It was built in the early 19th century, although there is a plaque on the building that dates it to 1784. The building is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond and has a roof made of Welsh slate. It stands two storeys tall, featuring four windows on the north side and two on the west. The ground and first floors on the north side have round-arched windows set back in round-arched panels, all with gauged brick heads. The first floor on the west side also has round-arched windows. There is a stone sill band at the first-floor level, and the glazing has been renewed. The building has bracketed eaves and a hipped roof with two late 20th-century metal vents. Inside, the Sugar Room retains its original timber queen post roof.
