Entrance Wing, Whitbread's Brewery (South Side)

The entrance wing of Whitbread's Brewery, located on Chiswell Street between the Partners’ House and number 53, was constructed in phases from around 1867 to 1955. The prominent entrance bay likely dates to 1890-1, while the flanking wings probably originated around 1867. A later attic storey was remodelled around 1955.

The building is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, with stone or possibly stucco detailing. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. It has two and three storeys over a basement, presenting an eighteen-window range to Chiswell Street. The street frontage comprises two similar wings flanking a slightly recessed carriage entrance. There is a five-window range to the west wing, a three-window range to the east wing, and a longer nine-window wing to the east. The segmental-arched carriage entrance has a stucco or stone facing, with a bracketed soffit, console, keystone, panelled spandrels, and a dentil cornice. The windows are flat-arched, with the window over the arch being tripartite and featuring a shouldered architrave, panelled mullions supported by consoles, an entablature, and a central pediment. Other windows have gauged brick heads. A storey band aligns with the cornice above the arch bay, while the rest of the building has a dentil cornice. The west section and the entrance area have an attic storey with a parapet that lacks a blocking course and features stucco detailing. East-facing stacks have oversailing courses.

Inside, to the west of the entrance arch, is a room with panelling including egg-and-dart moulding, some original from the 18th century and some later reproductions introduced in the late 20th century. Features include a panelled dado, a fine Adam-style chimneypiece with a console mantel shelf, four doors with moulded architraves, three of which have chamfered octagonal panels and two with scrolled pediments. To the east of the entrance arch, the building, likely dating to around 1867, was converted to offices in 1890-1. It includes a staircase hall with panelling to cornice height, architraves to doors, and a staircase with ornate metal balusters.
