Description
No. 18 Old Broad Street is an office building constructed in 1868, featuring a stone exterior and a parapeted roof. It stands four storeys tall over a half basement known as a 'crypt'. The building is designed in the Italianate style and has a four-window range. The entrance is located under a cornice on the left party wall, with the ground floor designed as a half mezzanine. The wall surfaces exhibit banded rustication, and all windows are segmental arched, complete with architraves and sill bands. The sills are moulded and project to support metal balconettes designed in an authentic style. At the top, there is a boldly scaled cornice featuring two tiers of brackets and a recessed floor behind. The building is positioned unusually in relation to the adjacent facades, jogging forward at a curious angle, which may indicate earlier building lines or the survival of an old structure. It forms an attractive and notable group with nos. 13-17 and the City of London Club on Old Broad Street.
