Description

Nos 13 to 17 Old Broad Street is a classical stone-faced palazzo building designed by Edward Norton Clifton in 1861. It has a regular elevation that slightly bows to follow the line of the street and stands four storeys tall, featuring two rows of modern dormer windows in the roof. The building is nine bays wide.

The ground floor has segmental-headed openings with masks on the keystones set between vermiculated piers, all raised on pedestals. Above this is a plain frieze with an ornamental band. The entrance bay at the western end is flanked by Doric half-columns that support an entablature, while a subsidiary entrance at the eastern end is marked by pilasters.

On the first floor, there are round-headed windows within Corinthian aedicules, each with a pierced balustrade. The second floor features square-headed windows beneath cornices on console brackets, with pierced balconettes and a continuous cill band. The third floor has segmental-headed windows with projecting cills on small brackets and a continuous cill band. The building is topped with a bracketed crowning cornice.
