Description
The City of London Club, located at 19 Old Broad Street, was built between 1833 and 1834 by architect Philip Hardwick. This building features a painted stone front in a severe classical style and consists of two high storeys, a basement, and a blind attic. The façade has seven windows and is characterized by a high, balustraded wall surrounding the front area, which is flanked by a pair of lamps on stuccoed pedestals at the entrance steps. The ground storey is channelled, and the doorway is topped with a flat hood supported by festooned consoles. The first floor is adorned with Doric pilasters and pedimented windows that are enriched at the center. A bracketed main cornice and a panelled and pilastered attic complete the upper part of the building.
At the rear, the elevation consists of two storeys above a basement, constructed from yellow brick with painted dressings. It features three large Venetian windows with Ionic columns and pilasters, and the cornice continues across this elevation, with glazed tympana spanning the full width of the openings. Above, there are five smaller windows, along with a plain cornice and blocking. The area is also enclosed by a painted balustrade. Inside, there is a good staircase and other notable features.
