Description

Numbers 6 to 27 Grove Terrace comprise a terrace of 22 houses, built in phases between the 1780s and 1793. Numbers 6 to 14 were constructed around 1793 by R. Cook; numbers 14 to 17, also around 1793; and numbers 18 to 27 were built around 1780 by J. Cheeke. The construction materials are yellow stock brick and brown brick, with rusticated stucco ground floors to numbers 19 to 22. Most of the houses have slate mansard roofs with dormers.

The houses are arranged with three storeys and attics, except for number 14, which has three storeys. Generally, each house has two windows, though numbers 14, 21, and 22 have three, and number 27 has four. Wooden doorcases are a consistent feature, carrying simplified entablatures with Doric columns and panelled reveals, with some featuring open pediments and arched fanlights. Most doors are panelled and have radial fanlights above. Number 15 has a plain doorway with a gauged brick head, while number 21 has an entrance within a side portico. Gauged brick flat arches feature above recessed sash windows. Cast-iron balconies are found on the first floors of most houses, except those at numbers 9, 11, and 13. Number 21 has a cast-iron verandah to the first floor with a tented hood, and numbers 22 and 24 have blind boxes to the first floor. The parapets are topped with brick bands, though number 14 lacks these. Original lead rainwater heads are present at numbers 6 to 13.

The interiors were noted to be original and of good quality, particularly at numbers 14 and 27, although they have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials define the areas, and numbers 7, 9, 11, 13, and 27 have overthrow lamp-holders.
