Description
A row of eleven terraced houses, numbers 18 to 28, situated within a square, built around 1825 to 1828. Numbers 22 and 23 each feature a canted front facade at the corners of the square. The houses are constructed from yellow and brown stock bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with simple stucco dressings. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet and brick party-wall stacks. Each house originally had two windows, although numbers 22 and 23 have one.
The design incorporates a side-hall entrance plan, with numbers 18 and 28 having entrances to a side street. Otherwise, low steps lead up to the entrance in the left bay, which features a doorway with 1/4 fluted column jambs supporting a corniced head, and a panelled door. Fanlights are patterned above the doorways of numbers 19, 20, 21, and 27, while numbers 22 to 24 have curved and radial glazing bars.
The ground-floor windows are round-arched sashes. These are 1/1 sashes in numbers 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, and 26; 6/6 sashes with curved and radial glazing bars in numbers 19, 22, and 24; a 6/6 Gothic style window in number 28; and an 8/8 Gothic style window in number 27. The upper-floor windows have gauged brick flat arches and contain 2/2 sashes in numbers 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, and 26; 6/6 sashes in numbers 19, 24, 27, and 28; and 8/8 sashes in number 22.
The first floor features a stucco sill band to full-length sashes set in arched recesses, linked by stucco impost bands. Individual and coupled iron balconies, supported by iron brackets with wrought-iron railings, are present. There has been extensive patching-in and rebuilding to the upper floors, including a plain brick parapet and stone coping. Attached iron area railings complete the property.
