Description

La Sainte Union des Sacres Coeurs is a Roman Catholic convent built around 1864, with later additions. It is constructed from yellow stock brick with Bath stone dressings and features a symmetrical, Classical facade.

The exterior consists of a three-storey central block with 11 windows and a slightly projecting entrance bay, flanked by four-storey wings with five windows each, which return at the rear to form a courtyard. The wings have slated mansard roofs with dormers that feature round-arched windows, elaborate scrolled surrounds, and pediments with cartouches. The central block has round-arched ground floor windows separated by Tuscan pilasters that support an entablature at the first floor level. The first floor has architraved sash windows, also separated by Tuscan pilasters, with a similar arrangement at the second floor. The third floor features architraved sashes separated by Ionic pilasters supporting an entablature with a balustrade.

The entrance bay has a bracketed hood formed by the entablature that breaks forward. The doorway includes a fanlight and a panelled door, flanked by panels depicting religious subjects. Above the entrance, there is a wide tripartite sash on the first floor and an architraved Diocletian window on the second floor, which is surmounted by a broken pediment containing a statue of Christ.

The wings have round-arched ground floor sashes separated by Tuscan pilasters that support an entablature at the first floor level, with architraved sashes on the first and second floors, and architraved round-arched sashes on the third floor. The interior has not been inspected.
