Description
Woodville Hall is a house that is now part of the Sacred Heart Convent School. It was built in the early 19th century and has been partly damaged by bombs and altered over time. The building is made of yellow brick and features a stucco parapet and part of a cornice in front of a slate mansard roof with dormers.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with three bays. The right side has been modified to connect with a later building that is not included in this listing. The centre section is recessed and has an entrance with a French window above, although the former balcony is missing. There is a ground-floor sash window on the left side set in a segmental-arched recess, and flat, gauged-brick arches above the sash windows.
Inside, there is a double-height stair hall, with the west part being semicircular in plan. It features an imperial stair that rises from a rectangular vestibule below. Notable original features include treads with brackets, a wreathed handrail with curtail steps, thin balusters, and an original safety gate across the upper landing. The east walls on both levels have egg-and-dart cornices topping the entablatures.
Of particular interest are two low relief plaster roundels on the east wall. The one on the ground floor depicts a handmaiden washing the feet of a mourning woman, possibly representing a Homeric scene, rendered in Neoclassical style. The first-floor landing features a similar style roundel showing a shepherd admiring women, which is reminiscent of the Judgment of Paris. Several rooms contain fire surrounds in a plain Neoclassical style, along with Victorian additions, mainly in the form of mouldings.
