Description

Southampton House is a house that has been divided into flats. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent restoration and alterations in the mid to late 20th century. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with a plain stucco band at the first floor sill. It has three storeys and a semi-basement, featuring a double-fronted design with three windows. The ground floor openings are set in shallow arched recesses, with the entrance approached by steps and located in a round-arched recess that includes a patterned fanlight. The entrance has pilaster-jambs supporting a cornice-head and a panelled door. The segmental arched recessed sashes have pointed lights within segmental-arched recesses, while the upper floor sashes are topped with gauged brick flat arches. A stucco plaque at the second floor level is inscribed with "Southampton House," and the building has a parapet.

Inside, the interior has been altered in the 20th century but still retains a staircase with cast-iron stick balusters, a column newel, and a wreathed wooden handrail. The doorways in the hallway and the entrance door feature reeded frames with stops shaped like female masks wreathed in corn.

Historically, during the early 19th century, this building served as the Southampton House Academy, which was run by Captain John Bickerstaffe. It originally included a side wing.
