Description

Numbers 21-39 is a terrace of 10 houses built between 1819 and 1823 by Thomas Cubitt. The terrace is symmetrical, featuring a slightly projecting central block that includes numbers 27 to 33. The houses numbered 21-25 and 35-39 are constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco ground floor and a plain stucco band at the first-floor sill. They rise three storeys with basements and have two windows each. The ground floor openings are round-arched, and the doorways have pilaster-jambs, cornice-heads, and fanlights, with number 37 showcasing a radial pattern. The ground floor sashes of numbers 23 and 37 feature pointed lights. The upper floors have gauged brick arches above recessed sashes, and number 35 has a cast-iron balcony. The houses have parapets, with numbers 35-39 being stuccoed.

The houses numbered 27-33 are stuccoed with a plain first-floor band, also rising three storeys with basements and featuring one window each, set in slightly projecting bays. They have round-arched ground floor openings and doorways with pilaster-jambs, cornice-heads, and patterned fanlights for numbers 29-33, along with panelled doors. Number 33 has a ground floor sash with pointed lights. The first-floor windows consist of four lights with cast-iron balconies, set in shallow, segmental-arched recesses, while the second floor features tripartite sashes in similar recesses. The terrace is topped with parapets.

The attached cast-iron railings with urn finials are notable subsidiary features. Historically, number 33 was the home of the writer Thomas Carlyle, commemorated by a plaque from the London County Council. The interiors were not inspected.
