Description
The fountain located in the quadrangle of the Eastman Dental Hospital was erected in 1931 as a gesture of thanksgiving for the recovery of Lord Riddell, the President of the Royal Free Hospital, and was funded by Sir Alfred Levy.
The fountain is made of white marble and features a copper statue of a cherub holding a dolphin, which stands on a marble urn-shaped support above a shallow circular bowl. This is set on a pedestal with a square base and is surrounded by three circular marble steps leading up to an octagonal plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the following text:
'1931. THIS FOUNTAIN HAS BEEN ERECTED AND THE COURTYARD BEAUTIFIED AS A PERMANENT MEMORIAL OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE RESTORATION TO HEALTH OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE HOSPITAL THE RT. HON. LORD RIDDELL BY THE HONORARY TREASURER SIR ALFRED LEVY WHO ENDOWED FUNDS FOR THEIR MAINTENANCE.'
