Numbers 26-52 And Attached Railings

This is a terrace of 27 houses built in the mid-19th century, located on the east side of Mornington Terrace, Camden. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco to the ground floors, and have slate mansard roofs with dormers. Originally designed as a symmetrical terrace, the central houses (Nos. 33-38) and the northern end houses (Nos. 50-52) project forward. A southern projection is now missing.

The terrace comprises three storeys with attics and semi-basements, while the central and end houses have four storeys and semi-basements. Most houses have two windows. Stucco porticoes with pilasters support an entablature; these porticoes feature fanlights and panelled doors, some with nail-head decoration. A side portico provides entrance to No. 52. The ground floor sashes of Nos. 26, 27, 29, 31, 32 and 40 have margin glazing. Stucco pilasters, fluted in the Ionic style, divide the houses and rise through the first and second floors to carry an entablature at the third floor level (with the exception of Nos. 46 and 49), which originally had a balustraded parapet. The upper floors have recessed, architraved sash windows. The first floor windows are complemented by console bracketed cornices, and a continuous cast-iron balcony.

The interiors have not been inspected.

Attached cast-iron railings flank the steps leading to the doorways, and geometrical railings define the areas. This building has group value, contributing to the character of the area.
