Description
Number 75 is a detached Gothic villa dating from the late 19th century, designed by TK Green for PF Poole, RA. It is constructed of purple brick with black and white brick banding and an eaves cornice, featuring stone dressings. The roofs are gabled, with fishscale tiling, ornamental cresting and dormers, all embellished with large, bracketed and shaped bargeboards.
The building has two storeys and attics and an irregular frontage with two windows. A central projecting bay contains the entrance to the right, which has a recessed gabled porch with a stone pointed arch supported by columns with carved capitals, a panelled door, and over- and side-lights. To the left of the entrance is a projecting bay with a ground floor canted bay, covered by a tiled penthouse roof. The windows are mostly 2- and 3-light sashes with arched heads and attached colonnettes. A stone plaque with a carved monogram “PFP RA” is set into the left-hand gable.
The return elevation to Arkwright Road includes two large projecting gabled bays with massive bargeboards; the bay to the right has a half-hipped roof, and a central half-hipped, bargeboarded dormer with Y-tracery window. The garden front is believed to retain a timber verandah.
The interior has not been inspected.
Attached to the property are stepped brick walls with coloured brick bands and a cornice of diagonally set bricks. The walls contain gate piers with battered caps and panelled timber gates.
