Description
61 Fitzjohns Avenue is a studio extension added to the north-west facade of No. 50 Netherhall Gardens, which is now a separate dwelling. Built in 1878 by the architect Norman Shaw for E Long, RA, the building has been altered. It is constructed of red brick and features a tiled gabled roof with a tall rebuilt chimney-stack and a dormer on the return. The structure has a rectangular plan with a gable end main facade, standing two storeys and a semi-basement high, along with a single-storey entrance extension to the right.
The main facade includes a projecting, lead-domed polygonal bay with five windows that extends through the semi-basement and ground floor. Corbelled brick pillars flank the windows and support a deep painted timber frieze with a projecting cornice and blocking course. The windows are casements with overlights featuring patterned leaded panes. The entrance is located on the north side and is topped with a crocketed hood.
Inside, there is a panelled room within the bay that has a modillion and dentil cornice, along with an inglenook fireplace flanked by windows. Originally, the first floor had a balcony above the inglenook, but this has now been blocked off. A large first-floor room, which is now subdivided, retains a restored barrel-vaulted ceiling with panels that have moulded plaster fruit and foliage architraves.
