Description

Hampstead Tower is a detached house built in the 1880s, designed by JT Wimperis for HF Baxter. Later additions were made in the 20th century. The house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has tiled hipped roofs with cresting, finials, and tall, enriched brick chimney stacks. It is built in a Gothic baronial style and has an asymmetrical design, with three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The original house has three bays. The left-hand bay forms a tall stair tower with a pyramidal roof and weathervane, featuring a continuous range of shaped windows and bartizans at the angles. The ground floor has a double-pitched entrance porch, accessed by balustraded steps, beneath an oriel window. The central bay has single transom and mullion windows to each floor; the ground floor has a balustraded balcony. The right-hand bay projects over three floors, with three-light transom and mullion windows. The second floor features a round-arched arcaded balcony with balustrade. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the house is a brick wall with stone coping, topped with large stone pyramid and ball caps.
