Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, dating to approximately 1864-1865, located on Lyndhurst Terrace in Camden. The houses were designed by John Burlison, with assistance from Alfred Bell of Clayton and Bell, a stained-glass manufacturing firm. The property was initially used as residences for both Burlison and Bell, connected by an internal door. In 1868, following Burlison's death, Bell's family took over the entire building, naming it Bayford House. Subsequently, Bell engaged Charles Buckridge to embellish the interior with Gothic detailing, and the house was divided again around 1895.
The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with decorative red and white brick dressings, bands, and diaper patterns, and have slated roofs with dormers and tall brick chimney stacks. The asymmetrical main facade features a four-window centre flanked by projecting gabled wings. The left wing contains a three-light, two-storey bay with an arcaded brick balustrade, linking it to a rectangular tower with a pyramidal roof and a corbelled oriel window. The right wing has a lower lean-to storey, concealing a two-light gable with a chimney and rising roof. Numerous windows are lancet style, with colonnettes featuring carved capitals. The ground floor is arcaded, creating porches at the angles. A circular tower with lancets and a conical roof is located on the left-hand return, alongside a chimney breast extending the full height of the building. The rear elevation has a wide half-hipped bay with a large, projecting canted ground floor bay featuring an arcaded brick balustrade, providing a balcony.
The interior was not inspected for this listing, but is noted to contain surviving, high-quality decorative features including fireplaces, stained glass, and painted wall decorations.
Attached to the property are polychrome brick boundary walls featuring gabled pointed arch gateways and small arcaded openings. A stepped and buttressed wall, including a round-arched entrance, runs along the left-hand return to Lyndhurst Road. An inner wall with grouped arcaded openings leads from the gateway to the porch of number 1.
