Description
Number 2 Cecil Square is a commercial building dating from around 1860, designed in the Gothic style. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring Bath stone dressings and a slate roof that is hidden by a parapet and flanked by end brick chimneystacks. The building stands two storeys tall with a basement and has three windows on the front facade.
The stone coping and moulded eaves cornice are adorned with beakshead ornament. On the first floor, there is one single and one double mullioned and transomed casement window, both with stone trefoil heads and a moulded band above. A band of pseudo-machicolations separates the two floors. The ground floor features two similar windows, where the lights are divided by columns with elaborate capitals and further intricate moulding above, interrupting the band. The left side of the building is darker, showcasing a trefoil fanlight and polychrome brick and stone voussoirs, along with chamfered architraves. The entrance includes a six-panelled door and a plinth, while the basement windows are nearly concealed but have Caernarvon arches. Access to the street is via five steps.
The rear elevation is made of stock brick in Flemish bond and has a hipped slate roof. It rises to three storeys, with a cantilevered tile-hung extension on the second floor, supported by wooden brackets. The sash windows do not have glazing bars but feature horns. The left side elevation includes a canted bay. Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters and six-panelled doors with architraves arranged in a cross pattern.
