Description

This is a purpose-built post office building constructed in 1910 in a Neo-Classical style. The building is of brick with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof. The front elevation, facing Cecil Square, is three storeys and has attics, displaying six windows. The roof is hipped at one end and includes two tall brick chimney stacks, a metal weathervane, and five flat-roofed dormers. Elaborate stone balustrading is present, along with a modillion cornice below. The end window bays project slightly, featuring giant Ionic pilasters between the first and second floors. First-floor windows are nine-pane sashes with horns and shouldered architraves, accented with wide keystones and aprons. The first-floor end windows are twelve-pane sashes with horns. These end windows have cornices with wide keystones. The central windows are topped with tall, open, pedimented hoods featuring elaborate keystones. The ground floor is rusticated and contains four windows with top-opening lights, along with two double doorcases with rectangular fanlights. An elaborate stone shield is scrolled into the corner. The elevation facing Union Crescent displays two bays with similar treatment to the main front, along with a separate section – the former sorting office – constructed of matching materials, but of three storeys and attics and a lower elevation. The attic storey here includes three curved, pedimented headed dormers, and there are four triple windows across the lower floors. Again, the ground floor is rusticated.
