Description
Number 28 is a detached house dating from 1891, designed by Robert A Briggs. It is constructed of red brick with terracotta detailing, featuring tiled roofs and tall brick chimney stacks. The design is asymmetrical, with an irregular window arrangement. The central entrance is distinguished by a round-arched gauged brick head on pilasters with enriched terracotta capitals, leading to double panelled doors with shaped glazing and a stained-glass fanlight. A two-light oriel window is located above on the first floor. Most windows are characterised by a row of small panes beneath a rectangular window containing an inset rectangle surrounded by irregular stained glass; first-floor windows have cambered bases to the upper sashes. A three-storey octagonal turret rises to the right, featuring enriched panelled window aprons and mullions, topped with an ogee copper cupola and weathervane. To the left is a bay window comprising three windows on each floor, with a central round-arched window on the first floor. A four-light attic window is set within a shaped gable. The return frontage to Frognal presents a large Flemish gable, enriched with gauged and rubbed brick and terracotta in a Queen Anne style; the ground-floor central window has a large open pediment. To the right of this is a tented balcony. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the property are boundary walls constructed of brick and terracotta, along with panelled piers featuring terracotta swag plaques.
