Description
Number 14 is a detached house dating from around 1886, designed by Harry B Measures for William Willett and Son, a builder-developer. The house is constructed of red brick with roughcast on part of the first storey, complemented by rubbed brick dressings and string courses. The windows are timber-framed with terracotta surrounds, now painted. The roof is tiled. The house is two full storeys high with an attic in the roof. The front elevation presents an asymmetrical composition in the Queen Anne style. The central entrance is recessed, flanked by mullioned windows. A bowed window juts out above, supported by a corbel and with a conical turret integrated into the roof slope. To the right is a projecting bay window with canted sides, rising through two storeys and culminating in a pierced parapet beneath a Queen Anne gable featuring a finial. Tall chimneys are located on the flanks, some of which have been shortened. The roof has a steep hip. The windows are a mixture of sashes and casements, although some have been altered. The interior was not inspected. A low garden wall runs along the front, featuring a plinth, buttresses, and polygonal piers crowned with terracotta finials. Number 14, together with the other Willett houses in Lyndhurst Gardens, forms a cohesive and substantial group.
