Description
Number 8 is a detached house located on Lyndhurst Gardens, built around 1886 by architect Harry B Measures for the builder-developers William Willett and Son. The house features red and grey-blue bricks with rubbed brick ornaments and a string course, timber windows, and a tiled roof.
It stands three full storeys tall and showcases an asymmetrical composition in the Queen Anne style. The central entrance porch is recessed and has a bracketed wooden hood with a fanlight above, set under a small pediment. To the left, there is a broad canted single-storey bay window with a balustrade, which is situated below a high straight Queen Anne gable that rises to an attic storey and is topped with a ball finial. To the right, a narrower canted bay window extends through two storeys, also beneath a straight Queen Anne gable that ends in a pediment. The house has tall chimneys on its flanks and a high, deeply hipped roof. The windows are a mix of casements and sashes, featuring small panes in their upper portions, although some have been changed.
In front of the house, there is a dwarf garden wall with a plinth, buttresses, and polygonal gate piers topped with terracotta finials. The Willett houses in Lyndhurst Gardens create a compact and distinguished group.
