Description
Number 12 and its garden walls and gate piers are a detached house dating to circa 1886, designed by Harry B Measures for William Willett and Son, a builder-developer. The house is constructed of red and buff bricks with rubbed brick dressings, string courses, and hoods. It has timber windows and a tiled roof. The building has three full storeys, with dormers incorporated into the roof.
The front elevation presents an asymmetrical composition in the Queen Anne style, featuring a central entrance with a recessed porch. A projecting, square-sided bay window rises through two storeys, terminating in a pierced and balustraded parapet, beneath a high, stepped Queen Anne gable with a ball finial. Tall chimneys are situated on the flanks. The steeply hipped roof is topped by a central dormer with canted sides. The windows are a mix of sashes and casements, with smaller panes in the upper portions, although some have been altered in recent times. A large, late 20th-century iron escape stair is located on the right-hand side and is not considered to be of particular architectural merit. The interior remains uninspected.
The accompanying dwarf garden wall runs along the front, featuring a plinth, buttresses, and polygonal piers topped with terracotta finials. Number 12, along with the other Willett houses on Lyndhurst Gardens, forms a cohesive and significant group.
