Description
This is a semi-detached house, dating from around 1886, designed by Harry B Measures for William Willett and Son, a builder-developer. The house is constructed of red and blue-grey bricks with rubbed brick dressings and string courses, featuring timber windows and a tiled roof.
The exterior is three storeys high, including a semi-basement, with dormers in the roof. Its design is an asymmetrical composition in the Queen Anne style, attached to a stucco terrace at numbers 6-22 (even) Belsize Crescent. Steps lead to a recessed porch with an ogee head and fanlights, above which are two windows. To the right is a projecting bay window with canted sides rising through three storeys, topped by a shaped Queen Anne gable with pilasters terminating in volutes. An elaborate tall chimney is on the northern flank. The roof is steeply hipped, cut back into a gablet below the ridge. The windows are a mix of sashes and casements, with smaller panes in the upper portions.
The interior retains the original hall and staircase, which are well preserved.
The front has a dwarf garden wall with a plinth, buttresses, and polygonal piers topped by terracotta finials.
It is believed to be the first Queen Anne house built by the Willetts in Hampstead, as part of the 'Belsize Court' development, and is attached to an earlier mid-Victorian stucco terrace. It forms part of the group of Willett houses in Lyndhurst Gardens.
