Detached studio house. 1885. By Norman Shaw. For Kate Greenaway. Altered. Red brick, upper floors hung with fishscale tiles. Slated roofs with tall slab chimney-stacks; main elevation with large bargeboarded gable. 3 storeys 4 windows. Architraved doorway with bracketed hood and part-glazed panelled door. Canted bay to left, at ground floor level with transom and mullion lights having small panes; 1st floor casements with small panes and penthouse roof. Central band of 5 casements to 2nd floor under projecting tile-hanging. Recessed bay to right with 4-light Venetian type window at ground floor; 2nd floor with cornice supports timber balustrading to balcony (which breaks forward into gabled bay) in front of a large studio window set diagonally across the bays to catch the north-eastern light. INTERIORS: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: plaque on ground floor commemorating residence of Kate Greenaway, illustrator of children's books, 1885-1901.
