Description
39 and 39A Frognal is a detached studio house built in 1885 by architect Norman Shaw for illustrator Kate Greenaway. The building has been altered over time and features red brick construction with the upper floors hung with fishscale tiles. It has slated roofs topped with tall slab chimney-stacks and a main elevation that includes a large bargeboarded gable.
The house is three storeys high with four windows across the front. The entrance has an architraved doorway with a bracketed hood and a part-glazed panelled door. To the left at ground floor level, there is a canted bay with transom and mullion lights that contain small panes. The first floor has casement windows with small panes and a penthouse roof. The second floor features a central band of five casements beneath the projecting tile-hanging.
On the right side, there is a recessed bay with a four-light Venetian type window at ground floor level, and the second floor has a balcony supported by cornice with timber balustrading, which projects forward into the gabled bay. This balcony is in front of a large studio window set diagonally across the bays to capture the north-eastern light.
A plaque on the ground floor commemorates Kate Greenaway's residence at this location from 1885 to 1901. The interiors have not been inspected.
