Description

University College School is a public school dating from 1906 to 1907, designed by Arnold Mitchell and built by Dove Brothers. Much of the main block was destroyed by fire in 1978 but subsequently restored virtually in facsimile by Michael Foster. The building is constructed of brown brick with stone dressings, featuring rusticated red brick and stone pilasters. It has a slated hipped roof over the central block, with a central copper-domed lantern and stone cupolas at the base of the hips. The architectural style is Edwardian Baroque.

The design is symmetrical, composed of a central block flanked by wings linked by peristyles. The central block has a 12-window centre and recessed end bays, while the wings have 7 and 8 windows respectively. The main entrance features a 7-window façade with a ground-floor colonnade, flanked by rusticated pilasters with carved cartouche capitals. A central round-arched entrance is adorned with attached columns supporting an elaborately carved broken scrolled pediment featuring festoons and a central cartouche; it is fitted with part-glazed panelled double doors. Above the entrance is a carved statue of Edward VII within an elaborate aedicule surmounted by carved detail. The grouped architraved sash windows have cornices; central ground-floor windows have segmental pediments, and first-floor windows have triangular pediments with keystones. A parapet tops the building.

Originally, the pilasters on the central block were topped by tall, rusticated chimneys. The wings have pilastered outer bays, supporting broken pediments with carved cartouches above first-floor windows, which also feature broken pediments and keystones. Ground-floor windows have broken segmental pediments and keystones. Inner bays have ground-floor sashes with keystones in broken pediments, and upper-floor oculi set within carved festoons that link to the pediments beneath. A cornice and parapet complete these sections.

The interior features a main hall with a barrel-vaulted, moulded plaster ceiling with Diocletian windows, and wooden-panelled walls with a continuous first-floor gallery. The River Westbourne flows beneath the school in a specially constructed crypt.
