Description
The tomb of William Purton and his family, along with attached railings, is located in St John's Churchyard and dates from around 1841. This table tomb is constructed of stone and is positioned against the churchyard boundary wall. It features inscribed tablets at the rear of an arcaded Gothic loggia, which has five openings with pointed hoodmoulds and foliar cusps above trefoil arches supported by columns. The loggia has a plain stone flat roof. Surrounding the tomb are cast-iron railings that include a central gate and decorative diaper and torch flambe finials, all set within a stone forecourt. Historically, William Purton was a close friend of the artist John Constable, who is buried just a short distance away.
