Description
Sun House is a detached house built between 1935 and 1936 by architect Maxwell Fry. The structure features reinforced concrete walls created using wallboard shuttering and has a flat roof. It stands three storeys high with a roof terrace, situated on a steeply sloping south-facing site. The right-hand bay at the ground floor serves as the entrance and garage, while the left side includes a rear retaining wall supported by thin steel pilotis, which also hold up the first-floor continuous balcony adorned with tubular steel railings.
The first-floor windows are plate glass sliding French windows, and the balcony's right end has a projecting canopy that extends over the garage and entrance. The left end features a panel of small glazed lights in the end wall, with thin steel pilotis supporting a loggia at the second-floor level, which is now panelled. The second-floor windows, originally sliding, have been replaced with metal-framed casements. The roof terrace is enclosed by a parapet with a tubular rail balustrade and includes a projecting canopy.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Fry was a founding member of the MARS Group, which significantly advanced the new architecture movement in the UK, making this house a pioneering example of the Modern Movement.
