Description

This building, known as Oak House and part of the Doctors' Surgery, along with The Old Gift Shop, dates back to the early 16th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. It is two storeys high and features three windows. The structure is timber-framed, showcasing exposed arch-braced close-studding on the left side. A small section of the original jettied upper floor remains unaltered, featuring a bressumer adorned with trailing leaf carving on the ends of the joists, which are supported by brackets and pilasters with crenellated capitals and carved shafts. One of the shafts displays trailing leaf carving, while the other may feature bay-leaf carving.

At the left end of the building, there is a 16th-century parapet gable made of red brick, which is mostly painted. This gable includes moulded brick corbelling at the first floor and eaves, and it is topped with crow-stepping and a later diagonally-set square chimney at the apex. The front wall on the right has been rebuilt in 19th-century painted brickwork. The roof is plaintiled and retains a rare set of six ridge tiles, each crested with figures of animals and humans from the 16th century. There are gabled 19th-century dormers and a splayed bay shop window for The Old Gift Shop. Additionally, there is a 19th-century six-panelled door with an oblong fanlight for No. 6. The interior features good un-moulded timber-framing that is exposed.
