Description
1 and 2 Market Place is a shop with storage and a dwelling above, dating from the late 16th century, with alterations from the 17th and 20th centuries. The building has two storeys and features a timber-framed and rendered structure, with a 19th-century painted gault brick underbuilding up to the first floor level. The roof is plaintiled and has truncated axial chimneys made of pink and gault brick. On the gable facing High Street, there are oak barge-boards from around 1600, which include billet carving and a drop-finial at the ridge. The front has 20th-century casements and a pair of 20th-century bay shop windows with a fascia above, along with a half-glazed entrance door from the 20th century. Inside, late 16th-century timber-framing is exposed, featuring a wind-braced clasped purlin roof. There is also a 17th-century rear wing that extends for 10 metres along the High Street frontage; this wing is timber-framed, encased in painted brick, and has a plaintiled roof.
