Description

No 3 Market Place is a building of medieval origin that has undergone alterations in the 17th century and was remodelled and extended in the mid-19th century. Originally, its use is not known, but it now functions as a shop with accommodation above. The structure features a timber frame that is faced in painted Flemish bond brick, topped with a plain tile roof and brick parapet gable ends, while the rear has a pantile roof. A truncated brick gable end stack is present.

The building is approximately square in plan, consisting of 2½ bays, and may have been part of a larger medieval structure that was altered in the 17th century. In the mid-19th century, it was encased in brick, and a two-storey outshut was added to the back.

It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window south front. The first floor features 19th-century four-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has a mid-19th-century pilastered shop front with an entablature and a later canopy box above. There is a doorway on the left leading to the first-floor accommodation. A large early 20th-century gabled dormer is also present. The rear elevation includes a 19th-century twelve-pane sash window on the ground floor and 20th-century casements above.

Inside, the ground floor showcases a chamfered cross-beam and chamfered beams against the right-hand (east) wall with stepped hollow stops. On the first floor, chamfered tie-beams are visible along with a jowled wall post at the front that has a short curved brace and a long shallow curved brace at the rear. The roof structure consists of coupled rafters truncated above halved and nailed collars, with later principal rafters featuring halved and pegged collars and clasped side purlins. Wind-braces are present at the front, and the original common rafters may be smoke-blackened.
